Get A Grip On Road Safety This Harvest Festival

2024-05-23

With Hari Gawai and Pesta Kaamatan just around the corner, let’s prioritize road safety during this Harvest festival season by remembering to check your tyre wear level to ensure you have sufficient tyre tread depth for optimal grip needed to brake safely especially in rainy weather.

Staggering results from wet braking tests conducted by leading motor publication, Auto Bild showed that as tyre tread wears down from new (8mm) to worn (1.6mm), it takes up to extra 10.7m – 95.5m to stop safely when braking on wet roads depending on vehicle travel speed.

New Tyre With 8mm Tread
Auto Bild tests showed that – on average – new tyres with 8mm tread took 26m to stop when wet braking from 80km/hr and 59.1m to stop when wet braking from 120km/hr in a water depth of 1mm respectively.

Part-Worn Tyre With 5mm Tread
Auto Bild tests showed that compared to new tyres with 8mm tread – on average – part-worn tyres with 5mm tread took extra 0.8m to stop when wet braking from 80km/hr and extra  12.1m to stop when wet braking from 120km/hr in a water depth of 1mm respectively.

Part-Worn Tyre With 3mm Tread
Auto Bild tests showed that compared to part-worn tyres with 5mm tread – on average – part-worn tyres with 3mm tread took extra 4.9m to stop when wet braking from 80km/hr and extra 49.8m to stop when wet braking from 120km/hr in a water depth of 1mm respectively.

Worn Tyre With Legal-Minimum 1.6mm Tread
Auto Bild tests showed that compared to part-worn tyres with 3mm tread – on average – worn tyres with 1.6mm tread took extra 5.0m to stop when wet braking from 80km/hr and extra 33.6m to stop when wet braking from 120km/hr in a water depth of 1mm respectively.
