Driving Behaviour and the Science Behind Tyre Wear

2025-05-21

While the excitement of the open road may often tempt us to drive faster or take corners with flair, a recent study published in Science of The Total Environment shows how various driving behaviours contribute to increased tyre wear, which consequently affects overall tyre life.

Studying the impact of driving behaviour on tyre wear
The study, conducted by researchers in UK and China, collected data from 76 operating cars – comprising conventional and hybrid vehicles – over 22 months, from Sep 2019 to Jun 2021, to investigate the impact of driving behaviours on tyre wear in real-world driving conditions.

Why do tyres wear faster due to harsh driving habits?
Driving habits that frequently involve harsh braking or acceleration shorten tyre life, as these actions increase shearing forces on the tyres and cause organic compounds in the tyre tread to volatilize due to the heat generated by friction, thereby accelerating tyre wear.

How do cornering manoeuvres affect tyre wear?
Vehicle cornering events, especially those that involve extremely fast cornering, contribute to greater tyre wear as these driving manoeuvres increase lateral forces acting on the tyres which create more friction between the tread and the road, thereby reducing tyre lifespan.

What effect does driving speed have on tyre wear?
Driving patterns that often involve high-speed driving decrease tyre longevity, as these road tendencies intensify rubber degradation caused by the exposure to greater frictional heat at higher vehicle speeds, thereby leading to the potential of exponentially faster tyre wear.

Smoother Driving, Longer-Lasting Tyres
Therefore, adopting smooth driving behaviours that incorporate mindful practices – such as gently accelerating, braking neatly and regulating vehicle speed – not only enhances safety on the road but also helps prevent premature tyre wear and ultimately extend tyre lifespan.
